The interview consists of sound recordings in two formats: 1 original audio cassette recorded in 1982 and a duplicate audio cassette created in 2006; and a set of 3 data CDs containing MP3 files (a master, a copy master, and a use copy). The original cassette was digitized during a conversion project in 2006.

Description
Scope and content: An oral history interview with Nell Barnes, conducted on the 7 Aug. 1982 by Ophelia Paine as part of the Historic Nashville, Inc. Oral History Project concentration on Nashville history from 1910 to 1930. Barnes discusses her childhood and education; memories of riding the streetcar to Glendale Park; quitting school and going to work downtown; her marriage and children; and life in Nashville during the period of 1910-1930, including downtown stores and various downtown buildings.

Biographical or Historical Data
Nell Barnes was born ca. 1909. Her parentage is uncertain as she was orphaned at 3 days old and left on doorstep of Blanche Cage Gardner (widow of Walker Gardner), who later adopted her. She attended Hume-Fogg High School but did not graduate; she had to quit school because Mrs. Gardner did not approve of the fashions being worn by the other girls at school. Having quit school, Barnes wnet to work downtown. She married Clarence Barnes (d. 1961 of Parkinson's) in 1926. He owned and operated Bell's Beauty Shop and School on 5th and Church. They had five children, including Rev. William Lewis Barnes.
