Description
Scope and Content: Scrapbook compiled by Clura Haney containing items circa 1933 to circa 1947. Contents include numerous postcards from various locations, including: Wilmington, Del.; Oklahoma; New York City; Chicago; Atlantic City and other locations in New Jersey; St. Louis; Florida; and Nashville, Tenn. Some pre-printed photographs, sold to tourists, are also included. Frequent brief annotations often accompany the items in the scrapbook. There are also membership and employee cards, newsclippings, brochures, menus, business cards and other small paper items. Some pages clearly show evidence of items being torn off or removed from the pages and have been so noted. The bulk of the scrapbook consists of items related to travel and tourism - postcards from sights and cities, brochures and other ephemera from places where Clura stayed or ate. A few of the postcards are in the form of cartoons, some of them racist. Some items are about the DuPont Company in or near Penns Grove, N.J. and Carneys Point, N.J. in the late 1930s. There are a number of small items related to the DuPont plant in Old Hickory, Tenn. as well as the surrounding community. Clippings from a Philadelphia newspaper document the crash of a bomber airplane in to the Empire State Building in New York City in July 1945. A part of the scrapbook documents radio and film stars in the late 1930s and early 1940s, mostly through news clippings. There is a small quantity of material about Jennifer Jones in the Oscar-winning film "Song of Bernadette." A part of the scrapbook also concerns country music, including content about Roy Acuff, Minne Pearl, and Dinah Shore, as well as WSM and the Grand Ole Opry, and a brochure from the "National Barn Dance" in Chicago in 1939.

Biographical or Historical Data
Clura Haney, (maiden name perhaps Jones), apparently attended Collinwood (Tenn.) High School in the mid-1930s, and probably married Charles Haney around 1939. Judging from her scrapbook, one or both of them must have traveled often in the middle and eastern parts of the United States throughout the 1930s and 1940s. One of them, probably Charles, apparently worked for duPont, likely at a plant in New Jersey, and may have transferred to the Old Hickory, Tenn. plant early in the 1940s. Clura's obituary published on Sept. 25, 1990, the day after her death, indicates she had three surviving sisters, as well as her husband, and she was a member of City Road Chapel United Methodist Church.
