In what became known as the U-2 incident, American pilot Gary Powers was shot down while on a secret mission to photograph sites while flying over the Soviet Union. In 1962, Powers, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a Moscow court, was exchanged for convicted Soviet spy Rudolf Abel, who was then in U.S. custody.
