Description
Although female nurses had been recognized as part of the U.S. Army and Navy in previous conflicts, World War II marked the first time that women were trained to work in combat situations. In addition to working as nurses, women joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC), the navy's Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), and the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) as a part of the overall war effort.
