Description
This Prelinger Archives film promotes the "intervisitation program" that selected New York City schools began in 1952. The program was designed to integrate, on a temporary basis, black and white students in districts 1213 & up., and 14 (at least according to the opening title graphics... the film states that 14 schools in total participated). Viewers learn about the ambitious goals and ideals behind the project, which paired schools in racially homogenous neighborhoods with other equally uniform schools, thus enabling students to visit and learn from each other. Starting with a large interracial choir singing the African-American spiritual "Let Us Break Bread Together," the film offers testimonials from administrators, teachers, and parents which are rigidly scripted but not without sincerity and which reveal both hope and apprehension about the project.
