Description
This episode of the U.S. Army's The Big Picture television series tells the story of the Hungarian Revolution as seen through the eyes of its freedom fighters. Beginning at the end of October 1956, the revolution against the government's Soviet-imposed policies caused thousands of Hungarians to find refuge in neighboring Austria and Yugoslavia. In response, the U.S. Army launched "Operation Mercy," transporting Hungarian refugees to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, as part of the U.S.'s humanitarian efforts. This video from the National Archives and Records Administration shows the U.S. Army's "human side" as it coordinates efforts with the American Red Cross, American Embassy in Munich, and other agencies.
