Description
When a fear is so strong that it provokes physical symptoms of distress-and being aware that the fear is irrational does nothing to lessen its impact-that fear is called a phobia. This program defines the criteria for specific and social phobias according to the DSM-IV-TR, using expert commentary and reenactments to clarify key points. The main categories of phobias, how phobias manifest in children, the unique problem of social phobia, and sorting out "normal" distress from anxious avoidance are all addressed. The video also examines a set of cognitive behavioral therapies that have proved effective in helping people with phobias cope.
