European and U.S. competitive weakness demonstrates to newcomers like China that the fast pace of globalization could give rise to unintended consequences, including an interconnected financial system that could lead to its self-destruction if unfettered; a sharp rise in savings and capital imbalances on a global scale; and a worsened income and wealth inequality at home.
