Description
Some art scholars would see it as a kind of Holy Grail experience - an invitation from the Louvre to come and scrutinize works by Leonardo, including the Mona Lisa , La Belle Ferronnière (also referred to as Portrait of an Unknown Woman ) and Saint John the Baptist . This film observes just such a gathering, made up of some of the world's leading experts on the life and career of the great Renaissance figure. The guests are given access to major works and allowed to examine them under near-perfect conditions. Inaugurating the two-day study period, each painting is taken down from the wall, extracted from its wooden frame and glass covering, and placed in a room on a simple easel, in natural light, just as the artist himself would have labored in. It might be superfluous to call this an encounter between mortals and immortal art - but there are undoubtedly insights to be gained by studying in such close proximity to Leonardo's hand, and these insights are made available by extension t
